Free Education Within Two Years

Issue 45, November 09, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 06, 2008, Minister for Finance Dr. Baburam Bhattarai told the reporters that the Government of Nepal was planning to make the education up to twelve-grade free and provide students with mid-day meals.

The Finance Minister also told the reporters that the 5% education tax the Government has imposed was the tax on the profits the private schools would make; it was not the tax on the tuition fee or anything else; the revenue thus collected would be spent on the education for the students living in the remote areas such as Karnali and Bheri zones, and the students belonging to the dalits and other underprivileged students.

Some experts on education said that most of the private schools were registered under the Company Act as companies so they could make profits; so they needed to pay tax on the profits they made.

The Finance Minister also told the reporters that the Government of Nepal had no plan to close the private schools rather had a plan to increase the quality of education at the public schools; once the public schools could provide quality education, the private schools might be automatically closed.
