Abuse Of Rights To Expression

Issue 19, May 9, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

May 4, 2010: the Central Commission on Discipline of the CPN-UML has asked Bamdev Gautam: one of the leaders of the CPN-UML, for explanations for sending an email with the names of 60 other leaders to the Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal on May 2, 2010 for asking Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to step down in view of the political situation brought by Madhav Nepal clinging to the power and by the shutdown of the country enforced by the UCPN-Maoist demanding the end of the Madhav government for paving the way to resolving the political deadlock.

Speaking to the Nepalese ABC TV anchor, Bamdev Gautam has said that on the night of he sending the email to Jhanalnath Khanal, some members of the ‘youth force’ affiliated to the CPN-UML has made eight telephone calls to him threatening to kill him.

Some human rights activists have been seriously concerned with the death threat to Mr. Bamdev Gautam, and the disciplinary action taken by the CPN-UML against Bamdev Gautam for simply expressing his opinions about the need for doing something for avoiding the catastrophic political situation stating the death threat and the disciplinary action go against the freedom of expression: one of the values of democracy. The so-called Parliamentary Democratic Party CPN-UML has attempted to muzzle even its leader through the intimidation by the members of its ‘youth force’ and through the disciplinary action.
