'Living Martyr' Dies In Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter
October 10, 2012: being belonging to a Brahmin caste not hanged for speaking and acting against the then-despotic Shah-Rana regime in 1940s, often dubbed as 'Living Martyr' Ram Hari Sharma went to rest forever leaving the physical body today. His body was consigned to fire at the holy place called Aryaghat in Kathmandu. Thus, the living history of one of the brave sons of Nepal has come to an end.
'Living Martyr' Sharma lived a long life of 96 years. Unlike other political leaders, he did not actively engage in the politics. He was one of the founding fathers of the Praja Parishad Party: the first political party set up in Kathmandu to fight against the tyrannical regime of the Shah-Rana regime.
On May 16, 1936, Ram Hari Sharma along with Tanka Prasad Acharya, Dasharath Chand and Dharmabhakta Mathema secretly set up the Praja Parishad Party at the house of Mathema located at the Jhonchhein neighborhood to fight against the despotic Shah-Rana rule. In 1940, Sharma became the general secretary of the Praja Parishad, while Acharya took up the chairmanship of the party. In 1941, the Kangaroo Court of Ranas saved Acharya and Sharma for being Brahmins from death but sent them to jail for life while giving death sentences to non-Brahmins such as Dasharath Chand, Shukraraj Shashtri, Dharmabhakta Mathema and Gangalal Shrestha. Tanka Prasad Acharya later became the prime minister of the country in 1956, according to ‘THT ONLINE’. Dasharath Chand, Shukraraj Shashtri, Dharmabhakta Mathema and Gangalal Shrestha are the four martyrs Nepalis revere.
