Prime Minister Madhav Nepal Resigned

June 30, 2010: Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has resigned after 13 months in office and ended one of the corrupt administrations in Nepal in recent years. He has been successful to stretch his stay in office for such a long time despite his shaky stand. During this period, he has been successful to do many things for himself and his relatives and well-wishers at the cost of the taxpayers’ money.
The UCPN-Maoist leaders have been saying that Mr. Madhav Nepal has been the main hurdle in the way to completing the peace process and promulgating a new constitution. They say that the Madhav government has done nothing during its reign concerning the peace process and the writing of a new constitution. So, they have been demanding the immediate firing of the Prime Minister. They have said that they have given the first priority to fire Madhav Nepal from the office in the three-point agreement the three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have reached before extending the term of the Constituent Assembly for a year.
It is hard to say the leader of which political party will lead a new government. Despite the three-point agreement, the three major parties have had difficulties in reaching consensus on serious political matters. In fact, after the three-point agreement, the distrust among the leaders of these three parties has spiked, as the UCPN-Maoist leaders have demanded immediate enforcement of the third point containing the resignation of the Prime minister whereas the leaders of other two parties such as NC and CPN-UML have said that they want to see the first two points of the three-point agreement enforced before enforcing the third point.
In a statement, the President’s office has asked the Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and the Council of Ministers continue in office until a new government is formed following the Article 38 (9) of the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.
