US President Obama Meets With Dalai Lama

Issue 08, February 21, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On February 18, 2010, US President Obama met with the Dalai Lama at the White House. In a statement, President Obama has said that he has his support for Tibet’s unique religious, cultural and linguistic identity and the human rights in Tibet. President Obama had called off the meeting with spiritual leader Dalai Lama last year not to hamper his trip to Beijing in November 2009.

In a statement released by the official Xinhua news agency in Beijing, spokesman for Chinese Foreign Ministry Ma Zhaoxu has said that the meeting of US President with Dalai Lama has infringed the U.S. government’s pledge that Tibet is a part of China. Dalai Lama has been living at the area called Dharmshala in India since he left Lhasa in 1959 after the failed uprising against the Chinese rule in Tibet.
