January 29, 2011: speaking at the 177th Foundation Day celebrations of Calcutta Medical College on January 28, 2011, the President said, “I will be failing in my duty if I don’t mention the great contribution this city has made to the Nepal’s long struggle for democracy, freedom, civil rights and rule of law. Kolkata was of great help as Nepal entered the modern era. Nepal, during its freedom struggle, drew inspiration from India’s freedom struggle,” Indianexpress.com writes today.
"At a time when Nepal had only a handful of qualified medical doctors in Nepal, it was a great personal honor and privileged for me to have been selected to study medical science in this college in this part of the world, initially called Medical College Bengal, whose history dates back to this very day in 1835", recalled the President, Reviewnepal.com writes today.
“This is the city where the great democratic leaders of Nepal held the first conclave of the Nepali Congress, a premier political organization of Nepal. The Communist Party of Nepal was also born here. Leaders of Nepal had a fruitful stay in this city during the struggle against the autocratic reign in the 1940s,” President Yadav said, Thehindu.com writes today.
The President said that the visit to Kolkata was like a homecoming for him even though he had lived here 33 years ago. “I could still converse in Bengali when speaking with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee!” he said, Thehindu.com writes
'I was born in Nepal but I have spent 10 years of my life in Kolkata - first in Calcutta Medical College then in the School of Tropical Medicine. I feel like I am back home,' Yadav said as the fully packed auditorium burst into applause, sify.com writes.
