Indian Students Rally in Nepal

Issue 01, January 06, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On January 01, 2008, about 500 Indian students affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) crossed over the Tanakpur Bridge, entered into the Nepalese territory in the far western region and rally there probably in retaliation to the rally held by the Nepalese students, and the local Nepalese people against the encroachment of the Nepalese territory a few days ago. In response to the Indian students’ rally, Nepalis also gathered to counter the rally of the Indian students in the Nepalese territory.

The law enforcement officials of both Nepal and India were there to stop violence. Nepal and India have an open border. So, citizens of both the countries move freely across the border.

The Nepalese media have been reporting on the encroachment of the Nepalese territory and the parliamentary committee has directed the government of Nepal to take up the issue with the Government of India. A parliamentary team along with the experts has visited several border areas where the Nepalese territory is allegedly encroached.
