Issue 34, August 25, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 19, 2013: encouraged by the formation of Telangana carved out of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, Gorkhalis have renewed their demand for a separate hill state called Gorkhaland. They believe that they are forced into the union with the West Bengal even though they have nothing in common with the Bengalis.

The renewed campaign for Gorkhaland might cost a lot to the people living in Darjeeling. Many students left the schools, as part of the campaign for Gorkhaland, the campaigners have shutdown all businesses in Darjeeling including the educational institutions.

One of the largest industries of Darjeeling has been hit hard. The production of tea has come to standstill. Tea gardens have remained untended. Tea leaves not plucked. Consequently, export of tea also has been stopped.

Gorkhaland campaigners have attempted to stage sit-ins at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu but the Indian embassy has stopped. Campaigners have permission from the local administration to hold a peaceful protest at the Indian embassy but the Indian embassy refused it, according to the nepalnews.com.
