On January 30, 2010, Nepalis celebrate the anniversary of the Martyrs’ Day every year in the memory of four martyrs such as Sukra Raj, Dharma Bhakta, Gangal Lal and Dasharath Chanda martyred for calling on the then despotic rulers in 1942 for political liberalization, then others martyred for fighting against the killer of democracy the then king Mahendra in 1960, then some others for fighting against the authoritarian Panchayat rule in 1990, and some others martyred for fighting once again the killer of democracy in 2006, and thousands others martyred for fighting the people’s liberation war during the 10-year period starting in 1996 and ending in 2006, and some others martyred during the Madheshi movement. Memorial services have been held at the places where those immortal four people were martyred.

In a statement issued on the occasion of the Martyr’s Day, President Ram Baran Yadav has said that Nepalis need to move on the path of creating prosperous and inclusive Nepal as conceived by the brave martyrs.

Recently, taking the advantage of the transitional period, some political parties have forced the government to declare their cadres even killed in the road accidents as martyrs thus devaluing the meaning of the word ‘martyr’. The government has set up a committee to set the criteria for declaring anybody as a martyr.
