Today Is The Day Of Dog In Nepal

Issue 44, November 3, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 2, 2013: Nepalis are celebrating the dog’s day today. They have been making offerings to dogs: domestic or stray dogs. So, dogs have been wearing marigold garlands round their necks and vermillion on their foreheads today starting early morning. Dogs have been enjoying good festive foods.

Nepalis celebrated the day of crow yesterday, and made offerings to crows as part of the five-day festival of lights and flowers called ‘tihar’ or ‘svonti’ or’ dipavali’ in Nepal.

Tomorrow is the day of cow or the day of Goddess Laksmi. Cow is an animal incarnation of goddess of wealth called Laksmi. At one time, the number of cows they possessed measured the wealth of people. So, cow symbolized the wealth.

The fourth day is the day of ox. Nepalis farmers make offerings to oxen appreciating their contribution to the farm work. However, the Nevah community performs the ‘body worship’ on this day for empowerment for a year.

The last day of the five-festival is the day of brothers. Sister worship brothers, and wish long lives to brothers.
