Need For Transitional Justice Mechanism In Nepal

Issue 50, December 11, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 10, 2011: a press release issued by the European Union (EU) Mission jointly with Norway, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan in Kathmandu on the eve of International Human Rights Day, the EU mission has urged the government of Nepal and political parties to expedite the process of establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and a commission on Inquiry on Disappearances to address the impunity prevailed in the decade long conflict and to provide transitional justice, Zeenews.com writes quoting PTI.

The bills on Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Commission on Inquiry on Disappearances have been submitted to the parliament. The Speaker has recently said that the parliament would soon pass the bills. However, the political leaders have been taking time to build a consensus on these two bills for passing in the parliament.

The EU mission has urged the Government of Nepal to ensure the rights of journalists, lawyers and other human rights defenders and make them able to play their rightful role in a democracy for ensuring the rule of law.

The EU mission has also repeated its commitment to the full support for Nepal at this crucial moment in its history.
