On January 22, 2009, the Government of Nepal headed by Prime Minister Prachanda decided to provide former Prime Minister and current President of the Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala with the benefits such as shelter, secretariat, healthcare and transportation at the State expenses.
The Government of Nepal also decided to stop the screening of the Indian movie titled ‘From Chandani chowk to China’ after students and some intellectuals protested the screening of the movie, as it has some dialogues saying Buddha was born in India. The government also instructed the Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad to tell the truth about the birth of Lord Buddha in Nepal. The government would permit to show the movie in Nepal only after censuring the dialogue.
The Constitutional Council headed by Prime Minister Prachanda decided to recommend four names to fill up the vacant positions lying at Public Service Commission vacant for more than 10 months impeding the appointments and promotions of civil servants.
On January 22, 2009, students affiliated to the CPN-UML shut down the Western Nepal tourist town Pokhara, vandalized 10 motorcycles and stopped the regular lives for a day alleging the students affiliated to the UCPN-Maoist for beating and injuring some students affiliated to the CPN-UML. However, students affiliated to the UCPN-Maoist counter charged some students affiliated to the CPN-UML of indulging in corruption and of attacking the students affiliated to the UCPN-Maoist when they wanted to check the corruption.
After the government reached the 10-point agreement with the locals that had stopped the vehicles on the road demanding the arrest of the culprits that cut the legs of CPN-UML cadre, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City administration has started collecting the trashes haphazardly dumped at every corner of the city on January 23, 2009.
On January 22, 2009, the Government of Nepal gave a green signal to the proposal for constructing the pipeline from Raxual in India to Amlekhgunj in Nepal for transporting fossil fuels. The major investor will be the Nepal Oil Corporation but India will also put some money in it. The estimated time required for completing the construction is about two years.
