Nuniya People For Controlling Child Marriage In Nepal

May 18, 2013: Chairman of Nuniya Society Development Council Nepal Bhim Narayan Mahato said the government should make an arrangement for free education at the higher studies for Nuniya people, they were backward socially, economically, educationally and politically; consequently, child marriage has been rampant in their society, according the news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.
Nuniya is one of the ethnic people of Nepal residing in terai. They have different family names such as Nuniya, Rajbhar, Binad, Beldar, Chauhan, Loniya, and Mahato, according to Chairman Bhim Narayan Mahato. Their estimated population is 1.3 million.
Nuniya Society Development Council Nepal has demanded that Nuniya people should be listed as one of the indigenous nationalities. They should have proportional representation in the Constituent Assembly. One-percent threshold provision for the proportional representation would deny their representation in the Constituent Assembly.
