Ruling And Opposition Are For A Showdown

January 30, 2013: the ruling and the opposition parties have been engaged in a showdown. The opposition parties have been claiming that they would create the hurricane of protests and tear down the elected government whereas the ruling parties claim that they would continue to run the administration, as it is if the opposition doesn’t cooperate on holding the elections to a new CA.
Speaking at a news conference held by the Myagdi chapter of Nepal Press Union in Myagdi yesterday, Vice-president of NC, Ram Chandra Poudel said that the CA elections could be ensured only under the NC-led government, and he claimed that the elections held under the NC leadership in the past had been fair, so, the next Constituent Assembly elections should also be held under NC leadership, according to the RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com yesterday.

Speaking at the opening function of the Nawalparasi district conference of the UCPN-Maoist on January 28, 2013, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda said that the opposition parties should use the elections to get the state power rather than sending the cadres to hurl stones at the vehicles of Maoist leaders as they did in Dailekh. Australian Ambassador to Nepal Susan Grace today said the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly without being able to adopt a new constitution for the country was a blow to Nepal’s transition to peace and democracy. “The demise of the most inclusive elected body in Nepal’s history last May without completing its important work of drafting a new constitution is a blow to Nepal’s transition to peace and democracy,” the envoy said inaugurating a training and resource centre at the headquarters of the Feminist Dalit Organisation (FEDO) in Kathmandu today, according to the HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE news of today. “It is crucial that fresh elections are held as soon as possible,” she added.
Speaking at an international seminar on peace held by the Lalitpur Midtown club, Professor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Priyankar Upadhyaya yesterday said that the governance in South Asia has become a play ground for political parties. “While parties fiercely compete for the politics of bandh, it never dawns on them how it impacts the poor and needy at the end of the day,” said Upadhyaya referring to the culture of strikes in Nepal. Professor Upadhyaya was a keynote speaker at an international seminar on peace organized by Lalitpur Midtown club, a member of Rotary International’s district 3292, according to the HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE of yesterday.

He said, “State power is not something that comes so easily by hooting in the streets. So the opposition parties better not dream about getting to the helm of the government at least for 10 more years.” Describing the present fight for government leadership as between the nationalistic and pro-people forces and corrupt capitalists, Chairman Prachanda said that the capitalists could not win this fight. “So it is better for the parties like the NC and the UML to cooperate with us rather than squandering their time in meaningless agitation,” he said, according to the HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE news.
