Starting off From Zero Again
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On May 23, 2009, Former Prime Minister and NC President Girija Prasad Koirala while proposing the name of Madhav Kumar Nepal of the CPN-UML for the position of Prime Minister in the parliament has said, “we have no alternative to understanding, working together and unity of all political parties; however, we need to start off from zero.” He has not elaborated what does ‘start off from zero’ means.
The Maoist members of parliament boycotted the election for a Prime Minster stating they will not cooperate with such a government until the suzerainty of people is established correcting the unconstitutional step of the President. Similarly, members of two small parties such as Communist Party of Nepal-United and Nepal Janata Dal also boycotted the election stating they will not participate in such elections until the President corrects his unconstitutional step.
Political party leaders supporting the candidacy of Madhav Kumar Nepal for the position of Prime Minster have already started off threatening to pull out the support if the government to be formed will not implement or implement the Eight-point Agreement the government has reached with the United Democratic Madheshi Front. The Madheshi leaders have stated that their bottom line for the support for the new government is the enforcement of the Eight-point Agreement they have reached with the government; they have warned of some CPN-UML leaders have even now going against the autonomous Madhesh province while leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal-Marxist Leninist, National People’s Front and Chure-Bhavar Unity party have opposed the autonomous Madhesh province. However, only the votes of Madheshi parties will play a crucial role in the current government.
