Decision Of Government On Election Law Acceptable To Political Parties

Issue 24, June 16, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 13, 2013: leaders of UCPN-Maoist, and CPN-UML have publicly said that they would accept whatever the government make deicisons on the election law. The four-party mechanism could not build a consensus on the controversial issues such as threshold of votes for proportional representation, and whether to allow the convicted politicians to contest in the elections or not. Then, the leaders of the four-party mechanism decided to turn over the authority to the government of making decisions on these issues.

Leaders of NC and UDMF have not said anything publicly about the government decision on an election law. The assumption is once they have agreed on entrusting the making of an election law to the government means they would accept the government’s decision on this matter.

Chairman of the interim government Khil Raj Regmi had had discussions with the leaders of small political parties and of the breakaway CPN-Maoist, and Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Nepal on these issues. Mr. Regmi has collected their opinions on these matters. Recently, President Ram Baran Yadav has advised Mr. Regmi listen to other political parties, too.

Some of the leaders of CPN-Maoist have said that the announcement of the election date would be the starting point of another people’s war. Whether it is a joke or a serious one we don’t know, yet. However, leaders of the CPN-Maoist have not registered it at the Election Commission (EC) for the purpose of the elections. The EC has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of reopening the registration of the political parties but the CPN-Maoist has not responded it. It might be the strategy of the CPN-Maoist not to go to the polls to pave the way for the UCPN-Maoist to garner the votes of the CPN-Maoist’s supporters, too.
