President Instructs Vice-president to Take Oath in Nepali

Issue 35, August 30, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On August 25, 2009, ceremonial President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav called Vice-president Permananda Jha over to his office and urged him to take the oath of office in Nepali as ordered by the Supreme Court of Nepal. Has the President right to do so? Is he not going beyond his constitutional rights?

On August 23, 2009, the Supreme Court of Nepal has ordered the Vice-president to take the oath of office in Nepali within seven days stating otherwise his duty will be suspended.

The time is running out for the Vice-president to take the oath in Nepali again, as the Supreme Court of Nepal has annulled his oath in Hindi. However, he has signed his oath of office in Nepali and is kept for the record. He has been in confusion whether to resign to please his supporters or to take the oath in Nepali to save his highly prestigious job.

At the same time, on August 25, 2009, the meeting of the leaders of the Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Democratic, Madheshi People’s Rights Forum, Tara Madhesh Democratic Party and various groups of Nepal Sadbhavana Party held at the parliamentary office of the Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party at Singhadurbar, Kathmandu has decide that the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nepal against the Vice-president taking oath in Hindi is prejudice and therefore is not acceptable to them.
