Ninth Day Of Dashain Festival

October 5, 2011: today is Mahanavami means the great ninth day of Dashain Festival. Artisans, businesspersons, police and army persons clean their tools of business and make offerings to these tools following the tradition. Some people make animal and bird sacrifices, others simply make the offerings of eggs. They believe that making offerings to the tools of their business keep them safe for a year.

So, you will find people making animal or bird sacrifices to their vehicles such as cars, buses, pickup trucks and so on. Others make offerings to their tools of business at their respective homes.

The Nepal Army has made offerings of fifty-five buffalos to Goddess Durga at the Lakuli means the royal square today morning in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur and other towns. On the last midnight, sacrifices of buffaloes and goats are made to Goddess Durga at the temple in main towns.

Today, the temple to Goddess Durga called Taleju in Kathmandu is opened to the public once a year. A large number of devotees line up to visit the goddess today from the morning to the evening. On this occasion, people can visit other areas of the ancient palace usually closed for the public during the rest of the days of a year.

In Bhaktapur, today, a buffalo called ‘kha-may’ raised at the temple to the nine goddesses called Nava Durga is shepherded to the temple to Goddess Brahmayani. A large number of devotees assemble at the temple square today afternoon to watch the buffalo shepherded to Brahmayani. The buffalo is washed at the stream flowing nearby the temple to Brahmayani, and is prepared for sacrificing it to the nine goddesses tonight.
