India Concerned With Nepal Telecom's Decision

Issue 41, October 9, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 7, 2011: the state-run Nepal Telecom Company has decided to award a contract on supplying US$19 million worth of equipment to two Chinese network equipment suppliers companies for its Next Generation Network project. In August 2011, Nepal Telecom (NT) picked up ZTE and Huawei to install equipment for its Next Generation Network (NGN). ZTE will roll out EV-DO CDMA equipment in the Kathmandu Valley while Huawei will roll out equipment in the rest of Nepal according to the news posted on the Telecompaper.com. The project is scheduled for completion in six months.

Indian security officials have been apprehensive about the Nepal Telecom's decision on bringing the Chinese to the border with India and its long-term implications in the security of India. Nepal Telecom's decision could mean a 'virtual free run' for Chinese companies that have links to the Chinese establishment on Nepal's communications network.
