Refuting Deepak’s Comment On Army Integration

Issue 02, January 10, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On January 4, 2010, in a press release, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has said that the media report on Indian Chief of Army Staff Deepak Kapoor’s comments on the PLA integration into the Nepal Army are highly distorted and do not reflect the position of the government of India on the issue. The embassy also has regretted that some political parties have been deliberately exploiting these distortions to create a controversy involving India; in keeping with the friendly bilateral relations, India and Nepal share close military and defense ties with longstanding institutional linkages between the armies of the two countries.

According to the media reports, Indian General Kapoor has told the visiting Nepalese Chief of Army Staff that the integration of Maoist PLA combatants into the Nepal Army should not be done as it might politicize the Nepal Army provoking widespread criticism of the general and the Indian authorities in general in Nepal. However, the government of Madhav Nepal has not said even a single word about it so far.
