Political Development in Thailand

Issue 36, September 07, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 02, 2008, after the death of a person in the clash between the supporters and the opposition of the government in Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has declared a state of emergency in the Thai capital. Supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) wearing yellow shirts rallying on the premises of the Prime Minster’s office and capturing the government offices have been demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. Yellow color is the color of the Thai king.

The opposition to the democratically elected government must have emanated from within the Thai royalty not being able to tolerate the power base of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. They have been using all sorts of State machinery to oppose the elected government and tear it down, as the elected government is of the People’s Power Party of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

PAD had been instrumental in removing Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in an army coup in September 2006. After two years they are again active to provoke the Thai army to take over the power again. This would certainly lead the Thai economy to the downhill development.

The Thai junta ruled the country for more than a year, wrote a new constitution and held an election in December 2007. The People’s Power Party won the election and formed a new government in January 2008.

The opponents of the government needed to fight the election for defeating the opponents but not on the streets. However, they refused to recognize the rural voters for electing the parliamentarians; they want to make the parliament an appointed one. They have been simply attempting to create political instability and provoke the army to take over the power again.
