Today Brothers’ Day In Nepal

Issue 45, November 10, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 5, 2013: today is the last day of the five-day festival called ‘svonti’ or ‘tihar’, the day is for worshipping brothers. Sisters are busy with assembling all the items required for making offerings to brothers and then taking them to brothers’ homes. Some brothers visit sisters’ homes making the lives of sisters easier.

Brothers also are busy with shopping for gifts to be presented to sisters at the end of the brother worship. Brothers appreciate sisters for making the offerings and wishing long lives, and even making longer lives after applying five color tikas on the foreheads of brothers. In appreciation, brothers give sisters cash or kind gifts.

The common belief we have is nobody can take the lives of brothers after sisters apply five color tikas on the foreheads of brothers. These five tikas go vertically down from red, yellow, green, blue to white.
