Slapping Leaders In Nepal A Fashion

Issue 47, November 18, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 16, 2012: Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda took a slap on his face from his party cadre at the public tea party he has hosted for all the political leaders, civil society leaders, diplomats and others on the occasion of the Nepal New Year 1133, the festival of lights called Tihar, and the festival called Chhatha in Kathmandu today.

This is certainly a breach of security rather than anything else. Every public figure has an enemy so needs to be secured in the public places. However, the Nepal police obviously could not give full security to the political leaders.

The first victim of the public slapping was the Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanth Khanal. He pardoned the attacker. So, the attacker not being brought to justice has emboldened another cadre to attack President of NC Sushil Koirala in the public meeting. The attacker attempted on attacking President Koirala hurling a chair at him that was more serious than simply slapping but his colleagues sitting next to him stopped the attacker. Now, Chairman Prachanda has been the victim of the attack in public.

Naturally, everybody thinks that the cadre slapping Chairman Prachanda must be of the CPN-Maoist. But the CPN-Maoist leaders promptly disowned the attacker. Talking to reporters after a meeting of the party at its headquarters in Buddhanagar toady, secretary of CPN-Maoist Netra Bikram Chand said that the incident was 'unfortunate' and termed the expressions linking his party with the incident as 'emotional and prejudiced', according to the state-run news agency RSS.

The UCPN-Maoist leaders have said that the assault on Chairman Prachanda was pre-planned; the attacker must have been specially recruited for the crime; the UCPN-Maoist will make a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Home Ministry has set up a three-member investigation team under the AIGP Nawaraj Dhakal with DIGP Keshav Bahadur Khatri and SSP Devendra Subedi as members to probe into the assault on chairman Prachanda at the tea reception he hosted today.

According to Annapurna Post reporter, the attacker first greeted Chairman Prachanda, and then slapped him while he was returned the greeting of the attacker. The attacker is identified as Padam Kunwar from the Rajkot Village of the Baglung district.

The UCPN-Maoist cadres immediately overpowered the attacker, and battered him before the police took the attacker under control and taken to the hospital for treating the brushes he received.
