Marking Birth Anniversary Of BP Koirala
By KTM Metro Reporter
September 11, 2010: leaders and cadres of NC have marked the 96th birth anniversary of late BP Koirala on Thursday, September 09, 2010 in Kathmandu. BP Koirala was the first elected Prime Minister of democratic Nepal. The then despotic King Mahendra toppled him in a coup and killed democracy for thirty years. The birth anniversary of such a legendary man should have been a national day of celebration, but the Nepalese politicians have set the tradition of marking the day of such legendary people in a partisan way.
If BP Koirala had sacrificed his ego and interest of his party, relatives and friends and had acted as a true democrat, Nepal would have been on the democratic path long time ago but his shortsighted political view had put Nepal in political crisis for quite long time. He did not hold an election to a Constituent Assembly even though he could have done so and easily won the majority of his party in such a constituent assembly and had written a constitution but he did not do so believing that his party would take power under any circumstances in 1950s. Consequently, not only the NC people but also the Nepalis as a whole have suffered from it.
