Madheshi Leaders Placing Emphasis On federalism

April 1, 2012: speaking at the mass rally held at the Shahid Manch in Kathmandu yesterday, leaders of United Democratic Madheshi Front (UDMF) have placed emphasis on the guarantee of federalism in a new constitution so that all Nepalis have an equal voice in the political system if not warned of disastrous consequences, as they will launch some sorts of a crusade for the sake of federalism, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Chairman of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Democratic Bijaya Gacchedhar holding the portfolio of Deputy Prime Minster has said that Madheshi, dalit, Muslim and indigenous people stand united to defy any constitution without federalism. He also has accused the leaders of NC and CPN-UML of not being able to accept the political changes that have occurred in the country.

Chairman of Terai Madhesh Democratic Party Mahanta Thakur has said that the old establishment has stolen natural resource of the Terai people; only federalism could restore the rights of the Terai people to the natural resources they have lost to the old establishment in the Terai areas.

Chairman of Nepal Sadhbhavana Party Rajendra Mahato holding the portfolio of Minister for Health has said that Prithvi Narayan Shah had united Nepalis at the gun point and had repressed the people benefiting only the few people of the establishment; the country needs to unite all Nepalis of Terai, hills and mountains emotionally and spiritually in one to make them prosperous, that could happen only giving them the rights to self-determination.

Acting chairman of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Republican Raj Kishore Yadav has said that Madheshi parties have never even dream of splitting the country but some leaders of major parties have been placing the label of secessionists on the Madheshis just to meet their political objectives and to perpetuate the subjugation of the Madheshi people.

Member of the State Restructuring Commission Malla K. Sundar has said that the country would face brutal consequences if a new constitution is promulgated without federalism means not giving rights to the people to self-determination that people have aspired to it and fought for it during the so-many people’s movement.

Speaking at the National Maithili Conference of 2012 in Rajbiraj yesterday, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that a new constitution without federalism could not simply be imagined; so, political leaders have been holding serious talks on federalism and the system of governance; his government has been always for giving Nepalis the rights to self-determination; and the Maithili language will have the equal status as Nepali language in a new constitution, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Talking to the reporters at Biratnagar Airport yesterday, Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel has said that the NC is for drafting a new constitution only after completing the peace process means placing the constitution writing on hold; he made it clear that his party has given the first priority to completing the peace process.

Speaking at the function held by Jagaran Media Center yesterday, Chairman of Constituent Assembly (CA) Subash Nemwang has said that the political parties have no alternative to complete the peace process and the constitution writing within the deadline; so, the political parties should work to this end without squabbling, as the parties have minimum time to resolve their differences and promulgate a new constitution, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
