Sixtieth National Democracy Day In Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
Falgun 7 (Feb. 19) is the 60th Democracy Day in Nepal the government has celebrated throughout the nation with various programs. Even after sixty years of first announcing democracy in Nepal it has not taken roots in Nepal because the then king gave democracy but the people have not taken it, yet. Consequently, political leaders have been making mockery of democracy abusing the basic principles of democracy in Nepal so far. So, celebration of democracy Day in Nepal is meaningless until all so-called democratic leaders follow the basic principles of democracy.
The irony is that the main characters such as Girija Prasad Koirala, President Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Madhav: the most responsible persons for not institutionalizing democracy in Nepal have issued statements individually in celebration of the 60th Democracy Day.
Going against the basic principle of democracy, NC President Girija Prasad Koirala has been instrumental in making President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav abuse the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 for directly writing a letter to the then army chief for saving his job, and then choosing Madhav Nepal defeated in two constituencies in the elections for the Constituent Assembly-cum-legislature for the position of Prime Minister. All these three characters responsible for breaking the basic principles of democracy have spoken for democracy making mockery of democracy in Nepal.
Ignoring the opposition of the international community, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has promoted Toran Jung Bahadur Singh indicted by the UN for the enforced disappearance of 49 people to the Second-in-command of the Nepal Army and has given the state protection to Major Niranjan Basnet fired by the UN Peace Mission after finding him responsible for killing a minor, making the mockery of the rule of law: the fundamental principle of democracy.
