Consensus of Seven-party Alliance

Issue 42, October 21, 2007

Talking to Nepal FM Radio, Vice-president of the Nepali Congress and Minister for Peace and Reconstruction, Ram Chandra Poudel said that the possibility of reaching consensus of the seven parties on proposal submitted by the CPN-Maoist to the Interim Legislature has been nil after the meeting of the leaders of the seven parties held on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 according to the Nepalnews.  He further said that his party would go for deciding the issues by voting in the legislature. The two main issues were the declaration of Nepal a republic by the Interim Legislature, and the electoral system that would ensure the proportional representation of all Nepalis in a CA based on their population.

If both the NC and the CPN-Maoist refused to negotiate and come to the common understanding then the seven-party alliance might break up. The NC might join hands with other royalist parties and attempt to save the monarchy whereas the CPN-Maoist might take the issue to the street again causing political instability.
