Writ Petition Filed Demanding Release Of Tibetans

Issue 39, September 25, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 22, 2011: central member of Nepal Human Rights Organization Advocate Indraprasad Aryal has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 demanding release of 23 Tibetans arrested by the Nepal Police while the Tibetans were on the way to India to visit their spiritual leader Dalai Lama, the state-run newspaper ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

The advocate has demanded immediate release of the Tibetans that have been illegally held by the Nepal Police. The advocate has also demanded to instruct the government of Nepal not to return the Tibetans to China, as their return to China will violate the international law and the fundamental human rights.

The 23 Tibetans were traveling in two groups at different times. The first group, consisting of 20 people, was taken into custody on Sep 11 in Bajura district, western Nepal, after it had crossed the Tibet-Nepal border in Humla district. The second group was held on or about Sep 13 in Barabise of Sindupalchowk district, north-central Nepal according to the Tibetanreview.net.

Tendar Tsering has reported for Phayul.com "Tibet rights groups urge Nepal to hand over 23 Tibetans to UNHCR." However, sources have said Nepal has delayed their release to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) due to pressure from China.

According to the wikileaks, the Chinese authorities have been bribing the Nepal Police for arresting the Tibetans in Nepal and then returning them back to China.
