Shortage of Petroleum products in Nepal

Issue 48, December 02, 2007

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The “Kathmandu Metro” reporter had reported in the Issue 43 of “Kathmandu Metro” of October 28, 2007 that the shortage of petroleum products would not ease even after the price rise of those products effective on October 25, 2007 because it was the making of the government headed by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala for making money.

After increasing the prices of petroleum products, the Government had eased the supply of petroleum for about a week. Thereafter, the government went back to the same trick of letting sell the petroleum products at the parallel market at the double prices but causing shortage at the regular market. The government has many excuses such as the high international prices of crude oil, losses made by the Nepal Oil Corporation, and unable to make payment to the India Oil corporation and so on.

Shortage of petroleum products has not only caused inconvenience to the Nepalese people but also has adversely affected the economy of the country. Prime Minister Koirala has proved his inability to run the state affairs, as he could not ease even the supply of the petroleum products not to mention the peace process and other political issues to settle. So, it is time for Prime Minister Koirala to quit the position making the way for someone to run the country effectively.
