July 18, 2013: the month called Sravon (July 16-August 16) is the most auspicious month for the Nepalese Hindu women to take a day-long fast every Monday and make offerings to Lord Shiva believing the lord will meet the wishes of the unmarried women for having the spouses of their choice, and of the married women for having long lives of the husbands.
Every Monday, women line up at the entrance to the temples to Lord Shiva, and wait for hours to get the turn to make offerings to Lord Shiva. Wearing green bangles, green glass beads necklaces, and green uniform in this month has been the tradition for the women. Recently, the Nepalese women also have adopted the applying of ‘mehandi’ on their hands. This has increased the demand for ‘mehandi’ and green glass bangles causing the prices of ‘mehandi’ and green bangles double at the Kathmandu market.
All these things have been happening in preparation to the grand women’s festival called ‘teej’ to be held after a month and a half. “Teej is a great women’s festival. In this festival, women enjoy eating good foods, dancing and singing on the streets on the way to visiting the temples to Lord Shiva, and on the way back home. These things are done in the anticipation of Lord Shiva will meet the wishes of unmarried women for having the spouses of their choice, and of the married women for having the long lives of their husbands.
