By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On February 17, 2010: in a statement released in Kathmandu, Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal Richard Bennett has condemned the threats against editors and publishers describing them as sending “a chill through the entire community” and stressing the need for upholding freedom of expression in Nepal. Unidentified people have threatened the editors and publishers of the Kantipur publications through emails and by phone calls for publishing the news concerning the murder of owner of the Space Time Network and Manager of Channel Nepal Mr. Jamin Shah on the busy street in Kathmandu on February 7, 2010.
Referring to the region that runs along the length of southern Nepal, Mr. Bennett said, “Unfortunately violence against the media is not rare in Nepal and has been witnessed especially against journalists working in the Terai. I urge State authorities to ensure a secure environment that facilitates full enjoyment of rights of freedom of expression as guaranteed by national and international human rights law.”
Mr. Bennett's office emphasized, “freedom of expression, including freedom of the media to publish news fairly and honestly, is fundamental in a society that respects human rights and thrives alongside the rule of law and good public security.”
