Jhalanath Khanal Elected for Chairman of CPN-UML
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
Former General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) Jhalanath Khanal got elected for the Chairman of the party defeating his rival K.P. Oli by 117 votes in the election held in Butwal during the general convention of the party. Mr. Khanal received 913 votes and Mr. Oli 896 votes out of more than 1,800 electorates.
Before the election, Mr. Oli had said that if he were elected for the Chairman of the CPN-UML, he would form a new government comprising the Nepali Congress and other small parties.
However, Jhalanath Khanal was for the consensus politics and for taking all political parties together and crating a constitution and taking the process to a logical conclusion.
The election for the chairman of the CPN-UML has clearly indicated the polarization of cadres into the right and left wings in the party. KP Oli stood for the right and Jhalanath Khanal for the left. Supporters of Former General Secretary of the CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal obviously voted for Mr. Khanal.
On February 25, 2009, less than 24 hours he conceded the defeat in the election for the Chairman, talking to the reporters in Butwal, Mr Oli said that about 500 phony representatives from across the country had been the cause of his defeat in the election.
