Prime Minister Inspects Flood-Affected Areas

On August 20, 2008, Prime Minister Prachanda along with the members of other political parties in alliance took the army helicopter and made an aerial inspection of the flood-affected areas. Then, he visited the flood victims taking shelter at schools and public buildings and promised them to do everything possible for their relief.
The local administration and the police have not been able to state the actual figures of damages of the property done by the floods and the loss of lives caused by the floods. The guesstimate is that probably the floods have displaced more than 50,000 people, and killed thousands, as the fate of thousands of missing people is not known, yet.
The government has announced phase wise relief programs. The government said that it released Rs 20 millions for the immediate relief of the flood victims.
Maoist leaders have been consulting with the leaders of other political parties to formulate a concrete program for the relief measures to be taken.
The Government of Nepal has sent a letter through the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to the Government of India requesting for immediate repair of the check dams and for possible relief work.
