Rejection Of Two Election-related Ordinances Provoked Controversy

Issue 35, August 26, 2012

By KTM Metro REproter

August 20, 2012: In a statement issued today, the CPN-UML stated that the President rejecting the two election-related ordinances on Friday, August 17, 2012 had done a business as usual, and chiding the president for it was an undemocratic indicating how democratic the CPN-UML was.

Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that the rejection of the two election-related ordinances by the president was inappropriate, and the government was ready to quit if the political parties could build a national consensus on holding an election to a new CA.

Second-tiered leader of NC Dr Ram Sharan Mahat told that if the trinity of the NC: Sushil, Sher, and Ramchandra could not resolve the squabbling in the party then leave it to other leaders to resolve. Clearly, these three so-called leaders had been impotent to resolve any problems in the party. Dr Mahat also said that no more meetings would be held at the residences of the leaders.

CPN-UML Leaders KP Oli went to see the president of NC Sushil Koirala at his residence in Kathmandu to formulate the latest strategy of forcing the current government out of office, as all the previous strategies had not worked at all. Mr Oli was no less irrational than Sushil Koirala concerning the political matters. Mr. Oli had been blaming Koirala for being impotent for selecting a candidate for prime minister. Mr. Oli also told reporters at his home in Kathmandu that the President could fire the prime minister immediately.

General Secretary of newly formed CPN–Maoist Ram Bahadur Thapa 'Badal' said that the current government was already ineffective, as it could not build a political consensus, so, it needed to quit the office, and let other political parties to build a national consensus. His party colleagues had been claiming for forming a new government.

President of NC Sushil Koirala told the journalists at Bhadrapur Airport today that a national consensus government was necessary to end the current political deadlock but the ruling coalition was reluctant to quit the office. He also said that no other alternative to a national consensus on resolving the national problems was available.

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist today said that the current government would stay on, as President Ram Baran Yadav might be a dictatorial if the current government turned over the power to the President.

Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai said that the opposition coalition was launching a counter-revolution for sending the achievements of the people’s movement to astray; so, he was not quitting the office as long as the opposition did not want to build a consensus on the national issues.

The positive sign appearing in the NC was that majority of the CWC members had been for an election to a new CA or a parliament to settle the current political problems. Some positive idea had at least dawn on the minds of some of the NC guys that an election was in fact the problem-solving tool.

Senior NC Leader Sher Bahadur Deuba blamed the party president Sushil Koirala for not honoring the agreement reached between the party and him, and said Koirala failed to resolve any problems in the party since he took the office of the party president.

Deputy Chairman of Sadbhawana Party Laxmanlal Karna today said that President Ram Baran Yadav had no authority to reject the two election-related ordinances, and accused the president of trailing the path of Gyanendra Shah.

President Yadav said that not the government but the Election Commission would hold an election that also only for a parliament if a national consensus was not built. These words sounded to be someone of the dictators of the past millennium. In the twenty-first century, nobody could dictate anybody not even the president no matter how high office he held.
