Mass Killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks

Issue 41, October 14, 2007

On October 11, 2007, the BBC reported that Turkey has denounced a vote by a US congressional committee recognizing the 1915-17 mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide. President Abdullah Gul of Turkey said that the decision was unacceptable and had no validity for Turkey.

The genocide bill passed in the House Foreign Affairs Committee by 27 votes to 21 was the first step to holding a vote in the House of Representatives. Eight Democrats voting against the measure and eight Republicans voting for it indicated that the divisions within the committee crossed the party lines.

President Bush said, "its passage would do great harm to our relations with a key ally in NATO and in the global war on terror". (BBC NEWS October 11, 2007)
