Government and Tharus on six-point Agreement

On Saturday, March 14, 2009, late night Prime Minister Prachanda and representatives of Tharus staging movement against the Madheshi label put on them causing great inconvenience to all the people in Nepal signed off the six-point agreement ending the 11-day movement of Tharus.

The Prime Minister agreed on amending the Interim Constitution and the ordinance to give the Tharus and other indigenous ethnic groups a separate identity following the procedural process.

Some Tharus said that they would stick to the demand for calling all Tarai as the Tarai area and not to make Tarai-madheshi. They did not recognize the Madheshi for the Tarai. They would continue to fight for the whole southern belt as a Tarai area through the constitutional crafting process in the Constituent Assembly.
