A female candidate elected to Vice-chair

Issue 49, December 07, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Maoists’ candidate Purna Kumari Subedi for the position of the vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly was elected by the majority votes on Friday, November 27, 2008. She received 347 votes out of 593 defeating all her rival candidates of different fringe political parties. Almost all political parties have agreed to elect a woman to the Vice-chair; so almost all six candidates for the Vice-chair were women.

Some political parties have started indulging in the politics of majority rather than politics of consensus; so, they have so many candidates for one position.

Major political parties such as Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) have not put forward their candidates, NC not finding any chance of its candidate getting elected, CPN-UML having an understanding with the CPN-Maoist to give the Vice-chair to the Maoist.

NC adopted the policy of not voting for any candidate. So, members of the Constituent Assembly did not vote for any candidate.
