May 24, 2012: at the four-party meeting held yesterday, NC and CPN-UML leaders urged Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai to quit the office following the five-point deal the four parties: UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML, and UDMF reached for paving the way for forming a new government led by the NC. However, UCPN-Maoist and UDMF have made it clear that the Bhattarai government stays on until a new constitution is promulgated.
At the same time, the call of President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav for joint efforts of the political parties on promulgating a new constitution within the deadline of May 27 has come at the time when the government and the political parties have opted for extending the term of the CA for three months.
Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula quit the office following the decision of his NC party on not cooperating with other political parties on extending the term of the CA. His colleague Surya Man Gurung followed the suit. They have joined the government only a few days ago. NC central leaders made remarks bashing General Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula for forwarding the proposal for extending the term of the CA without consulting the party leadership.
A shutdown enforced by the Tharu Joint Struggle Committee (TJSC) in 22 Tarai district for 21 days has been called off yesterday following the 10-point deal it has reached with the government but the Far Western Ekata Samaj has taken up the shutdown of the region protesting against the deal the government has reached with the Tharus.
The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued a stay order on the proposal for extending the term of the CA for three months, and summoned the prime minister and his deputy to be present at the court for explaining why they have opted for extending the term of the CA going against the ruling of the Supreme Court. Deputy Prime Minister Sitaula that has registered the proposal for extending the term of the CA for three months has quit the office following the decision of his party on doing so.
