Democracy Plus Hydropower Equal to Nepal’s Prosperity

Issue 12, March 18, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 14, 2012: opening the Hydropower Summit of 2012, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that democracy plus hydropower equals to the development of Nepal. It sounds the founder of the dead Soviet Union Vladimir Illich Lenin once saying that the Soviet power plus electrification means heading to communism. However, Soviet Union had never realized the prophesy of Lenin rather died in 1990.

Certainly, power is one of the elements that are required for socio-economic development. Nepal has been losing billions of worth of business every day due to the short supply of power. However, the opposition mainly the NC and CPN-UML did not permit the current government to build a thermal plant to mitigate the power shortage. So, the NC and CPN-UML are accountable for whatever the country has been making loss due to the short supply of power.

Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai might be right that the hydropower plus democracy would lead Nepal to prosperity but Nepal needs to overcome the obstacles posed by the NC and CPN-UML. Even, the recent deal the government has reached with the Chinese company to build the West Seti Power project has provoked the strong opposition of the NC lawmakers. How could Nepal make hydropower plus democracy equals to development when Nepal has the lawmakers that don’t want both the democracy and hydropower in whatever names they oppose these two elements?

Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai wants Indian investors to invest in the hydropower in Nepal promising to create an environment conducive to foreign investment but any prime minister in the current political situation would hardly could do anything against the NC lawmakers that are for stopping the development of any kind of power at any cost to meet their own interest.
