Consolidating The Current Coalition Of UCPN-Maoist And UDMF

Issue 05, January 29, 2012

By KMT Metro Reporter

January 26, 2012: in a meeting held at the official residence of the prime minister yesterday, leaders of the UCPN-Maoist and UDMF (United Democratic Madheshi Front) have agreed not only to keep the current coalition of the UCPN-Maoist and UDMF intact but also have agreed to consolidate it further going together to face the opposition of the NC and CPN-UML to break the political deadlock created by the obstruction of the House session by the NC and CPN-UML demanding the annulment of the government’s decision on legalizing the actions of the People’s Courts and Governments set  up by the Maoist during the insurgency.

In addition, the coalition partners have agreed on finding solution to the problems of price rise in the petroleum products. They are for doing some homework on reviewing the prices of petroleum products. Students and youths’ organizations have been protesting against the price rise in petroleum products. Some experts believe that the price rise in petroleum products is not the business of the students. They have been protesting for the political parties.

The coalition partners also have agreed on expediting the peace process. They will call a meeting of the Army Integration Special Committee (AISC) so that some Maoist combatants could join the Nepal Army, and others could go home following their wish for voluntary retirement.

As long as the coalition of the UCPN-Maoist and UDMF remains intact no matter what the NC and CPN-UML do at the parliament or on the streets, the current government would not fall; Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai knows it. He has already declared that he is not quitting the office as did Prachanda in the past means the Maoists have learned the lessons from the past mistakes.

UDMF leaders also understand that the coalition with the Maoists is better than with the NC and CPN-UML that have been playing a political game going against the interest of the Madheshis.

NC and CPN-UML leaders need to understand that holding the House hostage for the ransom of revoking the decision of the government on legalizing the actions of the people’s courts and governments will land them nowhere. In the past too, political parties obstructing the House session had not been able to achieve their objective even continuously obstructing the House session for 57 days. These guys need to understand what strategy is the best for the country for their parties rather than simply obstructing the House session and wasting the time of parliament. The Supreme Court of Nepal is taking up this issue, and its ruling will be final and binding to all parties. What is the use of obstructing the House session?
