Minor Tortured By Nepalese Police

Issue 39, September 23, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 19, 2012: the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has reported that the Nepalese police have arrested and tortured a fifteen-year-old-domestic worker called Mr Rameshwor Chhaudari following the report of theft on August 16, 2012.

The Police took Chhaudari to the Chief District Officer although the Nepalese law mandates the Juvenile bench to hold minors on trial. The Police have been holding Chhaudari in the custody at the Hanumandhoka Metropolitan Police Station.

Other detainees have reported that the police have been torturing Chhaudari, and the Police have not allowed his lawyer to meet him. The AHRC has been concerned that the boy remains at risk of further torture and ill treatment and unfair trial as long as he remains in the custody of Hanumandhoka Police Station alongside adult detainees without access to a lawyer.
