NC Leader Govinda Raj Joshi Goes To Jail For Corruption

July 25, 2012: following the appeal of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), the Supreme Court of Nepal had issued a directive order to the Special Court for reviewing the corruption case against NC Leader Govinda Raj Joshi. Previously, the Special Court had acquitted Mr. Joshi on the technical weakness of the case but the Special Court reviewed the case following the order of the Supreme Court and sent Mr. Joshi to jail for one and a half year and imposed the fine of Rs 21.6 million today.
The CIAA had filed a case against Mr. Joshi at the Special Court on January 12, 2004. The Special Court acquitted Mr. Joshi stating the time lag of the case. CIAA appealed the Supreme Court for reopening the case after the Special Court gave him a clean chit. The Supreme Court ordered the Special Court to reopen the case again.
Today, hearing on the case, the full bench of judges Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise of the Special Court convicted Govinda Raj Joshi of misappropriating a large amount of the taxpayers’ money while holding several ministerial offices and gave him a one-and-half year jail term and imposed the penalty of Rs 21.6 million. The full bench found Joshi guilty of illegally amassing the fortune while serving in various ministerial positions.
