Issue 39, September 27, 2009

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 21, 2009, on the occasion of opening the website of the Nepali Congress, Nepali Congress parliamentary leader Ram Chandra Poudel has charged the Maoists of attempting on the coup firing Chief of Army Staff Rukmangad Katuwal and appointing Kul Bahadur Khadka to the position of the Chief of Army Staff, and after failing in their attempt they have resorted to violence. Mr. Poudel also has said that the President has done right thing writing directly a letter to the Chief of Army Staff and stating him to stay on in the job.

The Maoists in turn have been charging the leaders of Nepali Congress of spreading rumors of the Maoists attempting on coup and then they went to the ceremonial President to take an action that has violated the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007. So, the Maoists say that they have been peacefully protesting the unconstitutional action of the ceremonial President; they also say that they want to discuss the unconstitutional action of the President in the legislature but the so-called leaders of the democratic parties do not even want to do so; as a result, they have to obstruct the regular business of the legislature.

The Maoists have been saying that the Nepali Congress leaders have instigated the ceremonial President to violate the constitution and write a letter to the Chief of Army Staff based on the false rumors of the coup attempt. The Maoists also have charged the leaders of the so-called parliamentary parties are for imposing a presidential rule in Nepal based on the false rumors.
