Political Change In Pakistan

Issue 20, May 19, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 13, 2013: the Saturday elections in Pakistan for the parliament have shown that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is going to garner the majority of seats in the parliament but the official announcement of the elections results have not come out, yet.

Former General Pervez Musharraf toppled the elected government of the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999. Musharrif became the self-declared president of Pakistan. Sharif went to jail for some time. Then, he went to Saudia Arabia in exile for the time Musharraf was the president of Pakistan.

The general elections were held five years ago for the parliament. The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) managed to gain the support of other political parties to form a government. The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been after the president Zardari for his involvement in corruption. His Prime Minister Gilani had to quit the office for not taking any initiative to the corruption case against Zardari. However, the elected government for the first time in the history of Pakistan managed to complete the term of office.

Now, Musharraf the man that had usurped the power from Nawaz Sharif, and put him jail, is behind bars, and waiting for the ruling of the court. Mr. Musharraf went to the self-imposed exile after Zardari came to power through the elections. He dared to come back to Pakistan to take part in the elections but the court has put him behind bars.
