April 7, 2012: Speaking at the International Conference of Mountain Countries on Climate Change held in Kathmandu yesterday, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that the people’s greed without any regard for the social responsibility has been causing the destruction of natural resources and eco-systems; the unrestricted profit-driven development models have aggravated the problems of the climate change and global warming, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
"The problems mounting over the climate change are mostly of immediate and urgent nature to find ways of addressing them collectively and immediately," the prime minister said, "firstly, we need to be cognizant of and responsive to the sufferings of the people for meeting their urgent needs for survival and, secondly, join them in preserving the ecosystem that nurtures them. The irony is that those who are most affected in the mountain countries have hardly contributed to climate change, yet they are ill-equipped to deal with its impacts due to their low capacity, poor technology and scarce financial resources."
He has said that the developed countries are responsible for putting the environment back to normal, as they are the key parties in polluting the environment.
Nepal is on the frontline of climate change and is one of the world’s five most climate-vulnerable countries, the Himalayas are the largest source of energy, food security, water and biodiversity but outburst of glacial lake might adversely affect them; so, the conference should provide a chance to understand the challenges and opportunities of our natural treasures and human civilization, and share and learn experiences and best practices to protect them, Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai said.
