Distribution of One Million Rupees to Each Parliamentarian

Issue 02, January 13, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal has started distributing one million rupees to each member of the Interim Legislature-parliament ostensibly for development projects in their constituencies. Members of parliament have lined up at the Ministry of Finance to receive the money. Already 200 members have received the check for that amount.

Political analysts say that it is not the right time to distribute the money intended for development works to the parliamentarians, as they might spend the money on an election campaign. The Government of Nepal has already set April 10, 2008 the date for the election for a constituent assembly.

Some ministers say that the parliamentarians will not be able to spend the money on the election campaign, as the money needs to be spent through the District Development Committee.

However, political analysts might come closure to the truth than the ministers. So, the government of Nepal is indirectly financing the election campaign. The Nepalese parliament has 330 members. The total amount to be distributed is 330 million rupees. It is not a small amount in comparison to the Nepalese annual budget.
