Dr. Abdullah Dropping Out Of Runoff Election In Afghanistan

Issue 45, November 8, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 1, 2009, in a press conference held in Kabul, Dr. Abdullah-Abdullah has said that he is pulling out of the runoff election for President scheduled to hold on November 7, 2009 saying the elections to be held by the current Election Commission is not acceptable to him. He was the contender for the Presidency. He has charged the incumbent President of rigging the election for President.

Dr. Abdullah-Abdullah has asked President Hamid Karazi to fire the Chief Election Commissioner and several other staffs of the Election Commission for holding fair elections. President Karazi did not comply with the demand of Dr. Abdullah-Abdullah.

The chance of the runoff election going in favor of Dr. Abdullah-Abdullah is very slim in view of the Taliban declaring disrupting the elections, low turnout of voters and the possible vote rigging. The practice of manipulating votes has been a standard practice in the developing countries.

Dr. Abdullah-Abdullah dropping out of the runoff election will put the legitimacy of the runoff election.
