Eight-member Commission On State Restructuring Formed

Issue 48, November 27, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 23, 2011: the cabinet meeting yesterday has set up a commission on state-restructuring following the agreement of the major political parties. The commission has been given the mandate to make recommendations for the number of states to be set up, and their names. This will be the final step to completing the draft of a new constitution. However, the political parties could not reach an agreement on selecting a coordinator. So, the political parties have mandated the commission members to chair the commission on rotation.

UCPN-Maoist has nominated Malla K. Sunder and Stella Tamang, NC Dr. Savitri Gurung and Dr. Ramesh Dhungel, CPN-UML Dr. Bhogendra Jha and Sravaraj Khadka, and UDMF Dr. Krishna Hachethu and Surendra Mahato, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

The commissions has got two months for making recommendations for the number of states and their names for including in a new constitution. Some experts believe that the time given to the commission is quite short. The commission needs at least four months to complete the job. The numbers of states and their names have been in dispute so far. The political parties could not reached any agreement on these issues.

UCPN-Maoist leaders prefer the number of states and their names in the ethnic lines but the NC and CPN-UML prefer a minimum number of states and geographic names. So, the commission has to make their recommendations in such a way that the number of states and their names are acceptable to all political parties.

After setting up a commission on state restructuring, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has completed one more task to completing the constitution writing. He has promptly taken the action to form a commission immediately after the major political parties agreed on it.
