Indian Ambassador Whipping Nepalese Politicians

Issue 23, June 7, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On June 1, 2009, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood has met with Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN-UML Leader KP Oli and has warned them of the possible adverse political consequences of the delay in completing the formation of the Council of Minister. He has been whipping leaders of another political party such as Madhesh People’s Rights Forum to join the government of Madhav Kumar Nepal.

The delay in completing the formation of the Council of Ministers has been caused by the allocation of ministerial portfolios among the political parties. NC leaders have had anticipated that they will receive the portfolios such as Finance or Defense or both. However, Prime Minister Nepal has surprised them appointing his lieutenants to the Finance and Defense immediately after taking the oath of office from the President. So, NC leaders have been confused how to tackle the new problems of receiving important ministerial portfolios and whom to appoint to the positions of ministers in the government of Madhav Nepal. NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel has said that his party has been waiting for what ministerial portfolios it will receive.

Similarly, Madhesh People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) leaders have been under the heavy pressure of the Indian Ambassador to assign the ministers under the leadership of the Parliamentary Leader Bijaya Kumar Gacchedar according to some leaders of the MPRF. However, they have been ignoring the external pressure and negotiating among themselves for leading the ministers to be appointed.

In course of forming a new government under Madhav Kumar Nepal, Madhesh leaders have water downed their demand for ‘Autonomous Madhesh Pradesh’ and have been quietly listening to the speeches CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has been delivering at various functions repeatedly stating that his party has not accepted the ‘One Madhesh One Province’, and will never accept it, as it will harm the sovereignty of the nation.
