BP Koirala’s Memorial Day

Issue 30, July 24, 2911

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 22, 2011: Today is the 30th BP Koirala Memorial Day. NC leaders and cadres have held several events to mark the memorial day of the legendary political and literary figure. BP Koirala is one of the founding fathers of the Democratic Party called Nepali Congress (NC). He has been the first elected prime minister of Nepal in 1959, and he is also the first prime minister the then monarch has removed unceremoniously in the coup in December 1960. Consequently, the country has gone back to the monarchical rule for 30 years but Nepalis have never stepped back from going ahead in making Nepal a democratic country. They have tore down the monarchical setup called Panchayat in 1990 under another legendary political figure Ganesh Man Singh. unfortunately BP did not live to see the reinstatement of democracy, as he has died in 1982.

BP was for making Nepal a democratic socialist country. He had his own vision of the Nepalese economy to make available one pair of bullock and a piece of land to every household at that time. How far that would have been possible is a question but his vision was to create an egalitarian society. In fact, he has initiated the land reform in Nepal during his term of office of prime minister and the then monarch after usurping the power from him simply followed his land reform program.

BP is also a story and novel writer. During his solitary confinement at the Sundarijal military camp for seven years after losing the power to the monarch, he had written several novels such as ‘tin ghumti’, modiniien’ and so on. So, BP is not only a politician but also a literary figure.
